If you are reading this before treatment starts, the useful thing to know is that almost every decision is easier made now than later. Here is what is worth thinking about, in the order it tends to come up.
Matching a wig to your own colour and length is far simpler while you still have both in front of you. It also means the wig is already in a drawer when you need it, rather than being chosen during a week you would rather spend resting.
Hair loss from chemotherapy usually begins two to three weeks after the first cycle, though it varies by drug and by person. Your oncology team can tell you whether your protocol causes it. Macmillan Cancer Support and the National Cancer Institute both publish reliable overviews, and the NHS covers hair loss more generally.
A scalp during chemotherapy is often tender and sometimes itchy. Two things help: a soft cap, and a wig that is not too heavy. Lighter and shorter is usually kinder than long and dense, whatever you wore before.
Many people wear a thin cotton liner underneath. It stops the cap edge rubbing and makes the wig easier to reposition during the day.
Not because it looks better than human hair — it does not — but because it asks nothing of you. It keeps its shape after washing, it needs no styling, and on a bad day it goes on in thirty seconds. During treatment that counts for more than it would otherwise.
Cost matters too. A synthetic wig between €20 and €60 means you can keep a spare, so you are never without one on a wash day.
We give 10% off the whole shop and free delivery with the code ACCOMPAGNEMENT10, and we ask for nothing in return. No prescription, no certificate, no explanation.
Plenty of shops require proof. We think that is out of place. Nobody should have to document an illness in order to buy hair. The code is published openly on our support page — take it if it applies to you.
Can I sleep in it? Better not. Friction against a pillow causes tangling that will not brush out.
Can I wear it in hospital? Yes. Bring a soft cap as well — wigs get warm, and some days a cap is simply more comfortable.
What if the colour is wrong? Send us two photographs before ordering and we will tell you which reference to take. It costs us a message and saves you a return.
Returns. Fourteen days, on an unworn and uncut item, as set out in our delivery and returns terms. We ship worldwide.
The classic cap models are the simplest to put on and take off, which is usually what matters most in the first weeks.
